Block Support Device

Block Support Device

A new unique fiber-optic block support device (BSD) has been created to utilize larger stringing blocks on angles when installing OPT-GW and especially ADSS fiber optic cables. The BSD is used when enough pulling force cannot be generated to make the larger, heavier blocks “swing out” and articulate for proper angle alignment.

The all aluminum BSD is fully adjustable to incorporate various degrees of angles and designed to fit and accept sizes 12” through 16” 74 series and sizes 20” through 35” 78 series S&R single conductor stringing blocks. The BSD will adjust to fit both wood and concrete/steel poles.

The BSD is capable of “floating outward” should the load and force during stringing dictate more
angle. When required, the BSD can also be used in power conductor installation as well. The BSD
will allow for the use of existing Sherman & Reilly transmission size blocks with larger sheave
diameter to provide maximum cable protection during the stringing operations.

Only urethane lined sheaves, as opposed to neoprene lined, are recommended as fiber-optic OPT-GW
and jacketed ADSS try to “walk up” the groove of the sheave. This “walk up” is due to the creation of
friction from the two like materials – the neoprene sheave and the polyethylene cable jacket. The BSD
does not realize much tension load if the assumed angle is projected within a reasonable alignment.

Specifications:

  • Will adjust to fit wood or concrete/steel poles.
  • Capable of “floating outward” should the load and force during stringing dictate more angle.
